Associate of Applied Science Degree
Photography and Digital Imaging
At Northern Oklahoma College
This major is designed to provide training for individuals who want to pursue a career as a photographer or digital imaging artist. The major emphases professional development with the object of entering the workforce upon graduation. For students who desire to complete a four-year degree Dr. Cope will help them prepare for transfer options.
The first year is the foundational year in which the student studies the basics of photography and pursues the general education requirements. The second year the student focuses on professional level development.
The areas of professional development could be in photojournalism, illustration, public relations, digital art, forensic, scientific photography, or service photography such as portraiture, wedding, or advertising photography.
Classes are offered at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Okla., and On-Location Workshops are offered in various times in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. The Photography program and Club offer trips during Fall break and Spring break. Dr. Cope usually teaches a professional landscape workshop during the summer that students may attend.
A student should be prepared to purchase basic camera equipment, if at all possible, during the first year. It is not advised that students purchase equipment prior to coming as ideas about what one wants and needs will be redefined during that first year. During the second year students will purchase more advanced equipment as each identifies his or her direction. Most students will find it beneficial to purchase a computer during the first year as well.
Students should plan to join the college Photography Club, Images3, as well as national student and professional organizations. Most professional organizations offer student memberships. Students will be advised to attend state and national conventions.
